This new type of orchid has named”exotic”.
The orchid variety, named the Telipogon diabolicus, was discovered in Colombia by Dr. Marta Kolanowska and Professor Dariusz Szlacketko from the University of Gdansk in Poland.
The rare nature of the orchid has earned it a spot on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List, which documents all the plants and animals which are threatened by extinction. Researchers believe that only 30 of these orchids currently exist.
The Telipogon diabolicus has almost-translucent pink petals and grows on a stem up to just nine centimeters tall.
But its miniature status is not what’s got everyone talking. Strangely, the orchid’s heart-shaped inner petals — the gynostemium — look very much like a devil’s head. A brilliant juxtaposition for something so peaceful and beautiful, if you ask us.
The fact that the petals are more pointed than an ordinary household orchid has also got people speculating.
There’s no denying that there’s some resemblance in the dark-violet gynostemium — can you see it in the video below?
